"--But I don't reckon it'd do her any good to know, yea?" Teige said, and grimaced. "Only now I can't stop thinking on it."

"You can put it down now."

"Oh, aye." Teige had been idly holding up one end of the couch while Hannah swept the floor under it with a straw broom. He eased the couch back onto the floor.

"How old did you say she was, again?" Hannah asked, watching as he did this.

"Can't be older than fifteen. A baby." He straightened up and brushed off his hands. "What d'ya reckon then, Hannah?"

Hannah paused. "W-well...on one hand, it seems wrong to hide something as big as her brother being alive from her." She started to sweep the floor again thoughtfully. "On the other, it seems cruel to tell her he's suffering a fate worse than death, probably, if he's not dead already. So...I don't know," she concluded.

"Ah," Teige said dryly.
