Hawk frowned, and then leaned forward to put his mostly-empty takeout box on the table, out of Janis's reach. "I guess I didn't think y'all would look so human."

"Technically, it's humans who look like us," Vlad said blithely, capping the nail polish. "We existed first. What were you expecting?"

"I dunno." Hawk leaned back, folding his hands on his chest, arranged a bit uncomfortably on the swing thanks to the wings folded up on either side of him. Idly he pushed his feet against the ottoman to move the swing. "I dunno shit all, though. They make y'all out to be such monsters on the radio back home, but...I guess I oughta know better by now." He paused. "I dunno what's real anymore anyway. Nothin' much feels like it is."

Vlad looked at him sympathetically. "Yeah," he said, "it might be like that for a little bit."

He stood then, searching the pockets of his sweatpants. "I'm gonna step out for a smoke. Tomorrow, I'll find you a bathhouse for those big wings, yeah? I have a feeling the shower in your bathroom will be a little small for you."

"Tomorrow," Hawk echoed. "An' then what?"

Janis had crawled down into his lap, and now rubbed her face against his chest as he scratched her behind the ears. He wasn't really looking at her, though, or at anything in particular.

"Like--what am I s'posed to do, now?" he said. "I came here for nothin', and there ain't nothin' to go back to."

Vlad looked at him for a moment, and then said, brightly. "Well, figure it out, baby! It's all you now."
