Hawk whipped around as best he could with his wings half-unfurled in the small space. In the small bed space behind him, he saw the livid glow of the lights reflecting off an animal's eyes.

"You've been thrashing around for ten minutes now. I thought you were gonna hurt yourself." Despite the weird eyeshine, the voice itself was totally non-threatening. The animal shifted and put her head forward into the light so that the eyeshine disappeared, replaced instead by languid, slightly worried brown eyes. Her head was dog-like, with a thick short muzzle and a dark mask; the light streaming in from the windows illuminated just one tall, pointed ear, and a pair of stripey paws crossed neatly on the covers. "You doin' okay?"

Hawk struggled to answer without stammering. "Y-yeah, Parker," he got out, and rifled through the bag he'd been using as a pillow restlessly. "No," he amended, "I dunno."

"Well," Parker said, and the bed creaked. Hawk looked up again as he extracted his radio from the bag. The hyena's shape had changed when he wasn't looking--she was now standing on two legs, oddly human-shaped except that her arms and maned neck looked somehow too long and powerful to be stuffed into the pajamas she was suddenly wearing. She searched the covers for a moment and found a carton of cigarettes and a lighter. "I'm gonna go out for a smoke."

Hawk blinked and Parker was shaped like a human again--no smoke, no glowing fire, just a woman with faint stripes on her arms stepping carefully over his legs, which were taking up the whole floor space.

"If you wanna join me."

"'S okay," Hawk answered, "I don't smoke. Thanks, though."

"A' course, kid," Parker answered easily. "If you're gonna turn on that radio, though--"
