The sky held dark as they left the city behind for miles and miles of two-lane highway winding through forests of bright orange and yellow trees. Blue foothills rose on their left as they got nearer and nearer to the mountains at the center of the island.

Hawk found himself looking at the map. It was still marked in red pen with the way he'd planned to fly and go on foot, skipping long sections of highway. But even so, there were only three cities left between them and Enodia: Crossing, Poppy, and Thraston. From Thraston on the northeastern tip of the island, there was just a strait of water to Enodia that looked very small on the map.

Hawk merely looked at the map for a while, hesitant. They were getting close.

Nightfall found the trailer merely parked at the side of the road. A pot over a small propane travel stove simmered and steamed as Abi stirred it; Parker read by the light of the stove and the trailer. Hawk stretched, taking the time to unfold his wings much farther than the trailer would allow.

Minnie, meanwhile, was inspecting Teige's shoulder with little rivulets of white light; after a moment she stepped back, and Teige lifted his arm, testing his shoulder. He swung his arm around a few times, grinning at the lack of pain, and then shook Minnie's hand vigorously with green fire already catching on his head and arms. In a flash he looked completely human again, the green fire casting a pallid light over him.
