Sundown came with a deep yellow-ochre sky full of dark, smudgy clouds. Hawk sat on the roof of the RV, looking at the light gilding the cars around him--and the shapes of Kim and Aram, hovering around their station wagon--and at the grass rolling away into the shadow cast by the foothills. The sun was just a glow, and it along the horizon made him think of human shapes in front of walls of flame.
"Earth to Sunshine," Teige said below him; he glanced down so see that Teige was in his full goblin shape again, all-black with glowing eyes. "We're headed in for drinks. Care to come drown your troubled thoughts? I'm buying."
Hawk hopped down easily, using his half-unfurled wings for balance. "Sure."
"I reckon we relax tonight before we're on our way tomorrow, yeah?" Teige said, as they headed towards Abi and Parker, who waited a short distance away. "Not much road left ahead of us now, is there."
Hawk hesitated. "Yeah."
Abi had become less human and more tanuki-shaped by the time Teige and Hawk reached her and Parker. They walked together towards the bar; light filled its windows, but no one loitered outside of it.
"Is this all of us?" Hawk asked after a moment.
"Yep," Parker answered shortly.
"Minnie wouldn't come," Abi added. "Said she'd be the only human in the bar."
