Janis was staring out of the living room window silently; the room was dark, but pinkish light was coming in from outside. Her head swiveled around keenly as there came a loud creak, followed by Hawk's voice.

"Vlad?" he called as he shouldered in through the front door, cradling the small body against him. "You here?"

Janis ran to meet him, answering him with a strident meow, as he pushed the front door closed again with his foot. There was no other answer, though.

"Of course not," Hawk muttered to himself, and carried the unconscious person into the dark living room, Janis following him loudly.

Carefully, he laid the small figure down on the couch. Janis hopped up first onto the arm of the couch and then the back, as Hawk reached over and turned the lamp on. He crouched down next to the couch, pulling off his hat and dropping his duffle bag.

"Well, sh--she?" he hesitated. Janis meowed as if in answer. "She ain't dyin'. I'd know if she was, right?"

"Myah," Janis replied.
