Helly worked quickly, though the laar did not stir; soon a net of roots had grown from Helly's arm to wrap very gently around the laar's broken leg, setting the bone. Gold threads floated up from the crevices in Helly's wooden arm, like spider silk.

"So, Liya," Helly murmured, not looking up. "I have been wondering. Most beginners aren't as far along as you--where did you learn to heal?"

Liya sat with her arms wrapped around her knees. She glanced up impassively.

"Oh. Uh...my brothers an' I were always getting hurt." She rubbed her arm convulsively, raising her head. "So I just learned."

"Impressive," Helly remarked. "Then you are only familiar with human anatomy?"

"No," Liya answered, quicker than she'd intended. She watched the gold threads very closely, brow furrowed. "My brother Hawk wasn't human. He had hollow bones and big wings. And his lungs and heart were huge." She barely registered both Helly and Yoshi glance up at her, as though surprised that she was admitting this. "He...he um..."
