Hawk wasn't sleeping. Even with the radio whispering about the possibility of Enodia closing its ports, he kept seeing Liya from his tilted angle lying in the grass--her bracing herself, shouting, fists raised.
No one else in the trailer was sleeping, either. Teige lay on the small couch staring at the ceiling, and the pinkish light from outside only just fell on the forms of Parker--a hyena, paws crossed, looking dully at nothing in particular--and Abi--a tanuki, curled tightly into an anxious ball with her tail over her nose.
Hawk finally got up and headed for the door without a word, leaving the radio on. He heard Teige say his name quietly as he did, but didn't answer, stepping out into the night.
The wash of radio static was replaced by the hiss of rain, which was falling cold and steady and soaked Hawk to the skin almost immediately. He stood for a moment looking up into it, then folded his wings around himself and moved around to the other side of the trailer. A cooler, a chair, and the dinner table sat in the rain between the trailer and Kim and Aram's dark car.
